Capital Punishment: Public Defender Edition – How We Argued Our Way to a Better Game

If there’s one thing we’ve learned from making Capital Punishment: The Party Argument Game, it’s that every decision is an argument—especially when you’re developing a game about debating. And after a weekend of intense playtesting, acting like dinosaurs, and whispering our way through legal defenses, we’ve arrived at a brand-new edition that fixes past issues and introduces fresh, hilarious mechanics.

Welcome to Capital Punishment: Public Defender Edition—the debate game that just got a whole lot more chaotic (in the best way possible).

Fixing What Needed Fixing

The original Capital Punishment was a blast, but players had feedback, and we listened. The two biggest issues we wanted to solve:

  • Negative and zero-value cards weren’t fun. They slowed the game down and didn’t add enough strategic depth.
  • Every argument felt the same. In the original version, you were always attacking the card you played, which got predictable.

So we did what we do best—argued about how to fix it. The solution? The Public Defender card and an entirely new game-changing deck.

Introducing the Decorum Deck: Chaos Meets Strategy

The biggest addition to Public Defender Edition is the Decorum Deck, a wild new set of rule-bending prompts that dictate how you must make your argument. No more simple point-counterpoint debates—now, every round has a new ridiculous twist.

Some of our favorites include:

  • Argue with T-Rex arms – Try making a convincing case when you can barely gesture.
  • Only whisper your argument – Because nothing says confidence like a hushed legal defense.
  • Public Defender Card – Instead of attacking a card, you’re now forced to defend it from its impending punishment.

We didn’t just want variation—we wanted moments that had us laughing so hard we couldn’t breathe. And after hours of playtesting, we knew we had something special.

The Funniest Playtesting Weekend Ever

Developing these new rules wasn’t a calm, calculated process—it was a full-on war of ideas. Every new card in the Decorum Deck had to earn its place through chaotic, laugh-out-loud playtesting sessions.

Picture three exhausted game designers, whispering impassioned legal arguments, flailing with T-Rex arms, and somehow making an actual game out of it. When we tested the Whisper Only card for the first time, we had to take a five-minute break just to recover from the absurdity. And the Public Defender mechanic? That one led to some of the best debates we’ve ever had in the game.
